We provide a great selection of solid and engineered hardwood flooring through Shaw, Mohawk and Mullican. Hardwood is a great way to brighten up a room and add warmth and elegance to your home. It is also a low maintenance product, making clean-up easy. Hardwood is one of the most durable products available in flooring. It truly can stand the test of time.
Engineered wood is composed of several layers. The top layer is made of the actual lumber itself. The second layer is where you have layers of crossed plywood to create a durable core. Or, you can have an actual made core such as the Stabilitek core with Shaw’s Epic Plus line. The third layer is the hardwood backing, which is the same as the top layer. A few products only have 2 layers – the top and second layers. Most products are now 3 layers, which are considered a true balanced engineered floor. Any “below” grade, such as a basement, tend to have moisture issues, which can ruin a solid hardwood due to the floor expanding, contracting and shifting. This can cause the floor to warp or the joints of the wood to “peak.” This is where an engineered floor becomes a better choice for certain areas. They can be used at all three grade levels and are highly recommended for any “below” grade level. The core layer provides enhanced toughness and durability when moisture issues occur. In areas with high humidity and water issues, an engineered floor is always recommended.
Solid hardwood is made from a single piece of lumber. It is 100% wood all the way through. Solid hardwood should only be installed at “on” or “above” grade levels; meaning the first floor and second floor.
